Project Spotlight: Custom Deck

This custom deck incorporated multiple functional zones and tied together a previously segmented backyard space.

BEFORE

Before we began, the space had a 3-season porch and multiple mini decks. The scope of work included removing the 3-season porch, demolishing the mini decks and re-roofing the house before building the new deck.

Design Plan

Through an iterative design process, we worked with the owners to design a space for grilling, eating, lounging and a connected landing for the secondary door to the right. We also created a custom decking board “picture frame” design and lighting along the wrap-around steps.

Laying out the Deck

Using state of the art tools and experienced craftsmen, we got the deck layout just right. We worked closely with the building inspector to ensure everything was up to code and matched our building plans.

Almost Done

Here you can see the lighting installation around the perimeter of the deck and the angular layout of the decking boards. This subtle visual cue creates functional zones.

AFTER

The finished deck is a homey space ready for relaxing, grilling and spending time outdoors.
